The January wind storm took shingles off half the street's roofs. Ridgeline had a tarp on ours that same evening, met our adjuster the following week and walked him through every lifted tab they'd flagged. Claim approved for a full replacement. Crew finished in a day and a half and ran the magnet over the lawn twice.
Leak around the chimney every time it rained sideways. Two other companies quoted a new roof. Tom got up there, found the step flashing had been caulked over instead of woven in, and fixed it properly for a few hundred bucks. That's honesty you don't forget.

It stops wind-driven rain and backed-up water at the eaves and in the valleys, which is what shows up as a ceiling stain in the middle of a February downpour. Code only requires it where ice forms along the eaves; we run it six feet up and in every valley on every roof anyway, because a valley full of fir needles in a November storm is the same problem.
Often, yes. If the shingles have life left and the leak is a flashing or pipe-boot problem, a repair is the right call and we'll say so. If the roof is at the end of its life, patching it is throwing money away and we'll say that too. Either way you get it in writing.
