Gutters & guards: materials and method

Seamless aluminum gutters run on site to the inch, oversized downspouts, and guards that shed fir needles and bigleaf-maple seeds instead of holding them. Around Portland, undersized or sagging gutters put water against the foundation, behind the fascia, and, in a November downpour, over the front lip and onto the porch.

We run seamless .032 aluminum gutters on site, out of the truck, cut to the exact length of each run so there are no seams to open up. Hidden hangers go every 24 inches, screwed through the gutter into the fascia, not spiked. Where the roof area calls for it we upsize to six-inch gutters and three-by-four downspouts, which move nearly twice the water of builder-grade two-by-three and don't clog on a single wet leaf. Pitch is set with a level, a quarter inch per ten feet toward the downspout, and every outlet gets a splash block or extension so the water lands away from the house.

Guards are optional. We install a micro-mesh guard that sheds fir needles and bigleaf-maple seeds, the two things that clog gutters in this area, rather than foam or brush inserts that hold debris in place. Gutters can be done with a roof replacement, where the drip edge and gutter apron get integrated properly, or as a stand-alone job in a day. Twenty-plus factory colors.

4 out of 5 stars

Seamless gutters and guards on a 1928 craftsman. Scheduling ran a week longer than promised because of the storm rush, but the work itself is excellent. The downspouts finally drain away from the foundation.

The January wind storm took shingles off half the street's roofs. Ridgeline had a tarp on ours that same evening, met our adjuster the following week and walked him through every lifted tab they'd flagged. Claim approved for a full replacement. Crew finished in a day and a half and ran the magnet over the lawn twice.

Tell us what you are seeing and send a photo if you have one: the ceiling stain, the shingles in the yard, the tree on the roof. A roofer texts you back within 15 minutes during business hours, and we come out, walk the roof and the attic, and leave you a photo report and a written price. No charge, no obligation, and a straight answer on whether an insurance claim is worth filing.
