We use heavy-gauge reinforced tarps sized well past the damage on every side, run them up and over the ridge so water can't get under the top edge, and fasten them with wood strapping screwed through the tarp into the decking so the wind can't peel them off. If a limb is through the roof we cut it back, sheet the hole with plywood, and tarp over that. If it's a large opening we shore the framing inside so the ceiling doesn't come down.
The tarp holds until the repair or replacement is done, and the tarp fee comes off that final invoice. If you're filing an insurance claim, emergency mitigation is a covered expense on nearly every homeowner's policy, and we photograph the damage before we cover it so the claim has the evidence it needs. Leak around the chimney every time it rained sideways. Two other companies quoted a new roof. Tom got up there, found the step flashing had been caulked over instead of woven in, and fixed it properly for a few hundred bucks. That's honesty you don't forget.

A self-sealing rubberized membrane that goes under the shingles at the eaves, in the valleys, and around chimneys and pipes. It stops wind-driven rain and backed-up water at the eaves and in the valleys, which is what shows up as a ceiling stain in the middle of a February downpour. Code only requires it where ice forms along the eaves; we run it six feet up and in every valley on every roof anyway, because a valley full of fir needles in a November storm is the same problem.
Often, yes. If the shingles have life left and the leak is a flashing or pipe-boot problem, a repair is the right call and we'll say so. If the roof is at the end of its life, patching it is throwing money away and we'll say that too. Either way you get it in writing.
